GATE Metallurgy exam is conducted every year by IISc and other seven IITs (Bombay,Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee). This exam gives the best opportunity for metallurgy and materials graduates to join for M.Tech/PhD at IITs, NITs, CFRIs with fellowship. The scorecard of this exam is also used by PSUs and govt. Bodies to recruit manpower. PSUs like IOCL, NTPC, BPCL, HPCL, BHEL, SAIL, NALCO, NINL, DRDO, etc. recruit. Generally they give 70% to 80 %  weightage to the scorecard and rest to interview.

General strategies for GATE Metallurgy

  • Be thorough with all the subjects of GATE Metallurgy.
  • Finish your aptitude and Mathematics preparation initially as it may fetch directly around 30 marks.
  • Solve previous year questions at least 15 years.
  • Take previous year questions year wise as your mock test before one month of examination.
  • Revise, making Formula sheets helps a lot.
Strategies by subject wise:
Engineering Mathematics

For Mathematics you should read two books, one is B.S. Grewal and others are Previous year questions books by MadeEasy/or other institutes. It helps to do proper practice and helps in getting a good score in this subject.

Metallurgical Thermodynamics

Read Ahindra Ghosh Book and David Gaskell Book. You can read all chapters of Ahindra Ghosh and selected topics from David Gaskell like roult’s law, first law of thermodynamics, second law of thermodynamics. For questions practice follow NPTEL lecture assignments and other thermodynamics questions of other GATE subjects like Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, etc.

Transport Phenomena and Rate Processes

Read any fluid mechanics book and solve all previous year questions. Take help of mechanical engineers who study fluid mechanics.

Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy

Read Tupkary’s book on iron making and steel making. Read H.S. Ray book on non ferrous metallurgy. Solve previous year questions. Search questions from NPTEL lectures. Finish steelmaking lecture by Deepak Majumdar.

Physical Metallurgy:

Read V. Raghvan, Callister and Solve questions of the book. Refer NPTEL Lectures also.

Mechanical Metallurgy:

Read Dieter’s book, Solve some questions which are relevant to GATE, as there are many questions which are too deep in concept that you can skip. Learn from Lectures of NPTEL also. Solve the assignments given in the NPTEL courses.

Manufacturing Processes

Read Manufacturing process book by P.N. Rao and refer NPTEL notes and lectures on manufacturing. Many relevant lectures will be from Mechanical engineering as this is core subject for Mechanical Engineering too. Watch videos and solve questions of mechanical engineering previous year questions which are relevant to ours.

DOs and DON’T DOs for Exams

  • Avoid silly mistakes in calculations.
  • Do not spend the whole time on one question if you are stuck somewhere.
  • Start solving aptitude questions first. (You can start by technical also, it depends on the individual).
  • While doing rough, divide each rough sheet into different questions so that when you revisit the question then you can easily refer.
  • Practice the scientific calculator well in advance to avoid mistakes and extra time consumed during exams.

Last two months strategy

  • Practice All Questions from previous years and NPTEL assignments.
  • Revise your notes.
  • Start giving mock tests subjectwise, after this full length test.

Strategy by GATE 2022 Metallurgical Engineering Topper – Mr. Mohit Patidar

Mohit Patidar is a graduate of NIT Jamshedpur and currently studying M.Tech at IIT Madras. Mohit got 80.67 Marks and Score of 952.

He followed following NPTEL Lectures:
  • Thermodynamics from Prof. BS Murthy
  • Corrosion Lecture of Prof. K Mondal
  • Physical Metallurgy from Prof. Rajesh Prasad and other relevant videos.
He followed following books
  • Mechanical metallurgy and Metal Forming- Dieter,
  • Callister’s Materials Science and Engineering
  • Thermodynamics- Gaskell, BS upadhyay & RK Dubey
  • NPTEL Lectures
  • Other standard books of Metallurgy.
Final Suggestion from him:

He says that solving previous year questions gives an insight of the types of questions you are going to expect in exams. Be versed with online calculator, avoid silly mistakes and do not try to just read whole things, stick to syllabus of GATE
